MSU shines in South Africa Midlands State University’s Debate Team flew the country’s flag high at the Pan African University Debate Championships ( PAUDC ) recently held at the University of Limpopo; South Africa, from the 5th to the 12th of December, 2014. Out of eight African countries represented by more than 40 tertiary institutions, and more than 120 public speakers competing for the title, MSU finished second. The team put up a sterling performance, collecting two awards for the best country speaker and 2nd best public speaker in Africa in the name of Chelesani Ndlovu and Samuel Muleya respectively. Countries that participated in the debate competition included South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe which was represented by five Universities and seven polytechnic colleges. MSU was the only institution from Zimbabwe which managed to get into the top thirty two with Chelesani Ndlovu and Eugine Xaba qualifying to the octofinals of the competition together with one of the adjudicators namely Trevor Tapiwanashe James writing Zimbabwean history by becoming the first Zimbabwean adjudicator to qualify for the octofinals in the 7 year old tournament . The attainment of the Pan African Universities Debate Council Chairmanship position by Samuel Muleya and the right to host the PAUDC in 2016 added to the array of successes of the Great Debaters. The Great Debaters will be representing the University and the nation at the World Universities Debating Championship In Malaysia from the 22nd of December 2014 to the 4th of January 2015. The team comprising of 25 students, accompanied by their Patron Mr T.W Chibanda left South Africa with great honour for their exceptional valour and enterprise. The same delegates are to represent the institution in Ghana for the 2015 PAUDC as they take over the tournament to be hosted by Midlands State University in 2016.
