MTPA PETITION FINALISED AND SUBMITTED Well folks, heres the news. In the end we didnt make 4,000 signatures - we made FIVE THOUSAND signatures. 5,470 to be precise!! Below is the press release and a video of me counting the signatures. PRESS RELEASE: MACAU TAXI PASSENGER ASSOCIATION (MTPA) SUBMITS PETITION WITH 5,470 SIGNATURES IN PERSON TO DSAT TODAY. Today the President of the Macau Taxi Passengers Association, Andrew W Scott, submitted a petition with 5,470 signatures to the Macau government urging the government to improve Macau’s taxi service and reducing the unlawful activities commonly committed by some Macau taxi drivers. The petition comprised a cover sheet and 264 sheets of signatures, with each signature sheet ranging from 1 to 30 signatures. The signatories were mainly Macau residents but also included some visitors to Macau. The exact text of the MTPA petition was: PETITION: BETTER TAXI SERVICE IN MACAU I support the Macau government’s efforts to make Macau a resident and visitor-friendly destination. I urge the government to conduct a complete review of Macaus long-term taxi needs with the aim of improving the taxi service. This should be done by reducing the unlawful activities of a few of Macau’s taxi drivers that are damaging the reputation of the good drivers and the overall city of Macau by implementing strategies such as those listed at the bottom of this page. … Bottom of page: Solutions include the introduction of e-taxi driver licenses, GPS tracking, audio visual recording equipment, more taxi stand controllers and undercover officers, more taxi-related enforcement power to the police, on-the-spot evidence collection, increased penalties and possible license suspension for violations. Finally, I also support the introduction of education and commendation programs for taxi drivers. For more information on the petition, please visit facebook/groups/macautaxidrivershame. The President of the Macau Taxi Passengers Association, Andrew W Scott, said, “The Macau Taxi industry right now is an absolute disgrace, its shameful for our wonderful city. Extortion, violence and scamming by taxi drivers are an every day affair. Even just in the last two weeks I have heard of three separate incidents of gangs of taxi drivers beating up potential passengers in the Venetian West Lobby driveway whose only crime was refusing pay to illegal fares up to MOP$2,000 for a taxi fare that should cost around MOP$50. The MTPA is hopeful that the announcement yesterday of Mr Raimundo Arrais do Rosario as the new Secretary for Lands, Public Works and Transport will represent a new start for transportation in Macau and that Mr Rosario will take this dreadful taxi problem seriously.” The MTPA was disappointed that the Director of the Traffic Affairs Bureau (DSAT), Mr Wong Wan, didn’t seem to take the concerns of Macau’s taxi passengers seriously enough to receive the petition himself. Mr Wong does have a history of meeting with other Macau Associations, but on this occasion sent Public Relations staff to receive the petition. About the Macau Taxi Passengers Association: The MTPA (853taxi.org) was born from the The Macau Taxi Driver Shame Facebook Group an internet phenomenon formed on 30 June 2014 and which now comprises more than 4,400 members. The group contains vigorous discussion, images and videos of widespread illegal, unethical and even violent behaviour by Macau taxi drivers, as well as a Blacklist of offending taxis and a much smaller Whitelist of recommended Macau taxi drivers. The MTPA was established with the aim of encouraging reform of the Macau taxi industry, which is widely acknowledged as the worst taxi industry in Asia.
