MTV’s 120 Minutes ran from 1986 to 2000, and on MTV2 from 2001 to 2003. 120 Minutes was MTV’s exploration into alternative music. Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit premiered on 120 Minutes and quickly moved into MTVs mainstream rotation. Two ‘best of’ albums were released in 1991, MTV: Best of 120 Minutes, Vol. 1 and 2, featuring some incredible tracks by RHCP, Soul Asylum, The Stone Roses, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, TMBG, Camper Van Beethoven, R.E.M., The Ramones, Ministry, Joy Division (and their rebirth, New Order), The Violent Femmes and others. The show featured an incredible variety of bands beyond those on the albums, and it would be well worth the effort to seek out the episodes not just for the music, but also for the personalities involved as hosts and guests of the show. Enjoy a few videos from the show. and one semi-related oddity.
