MUFTI v/s MODI,PDP INDILEMS.. After being in politics for 52 years, Mufti Muhammed Sayeed has to make the toughest political decision of his life. Even his detractors admit that Mufti is one of the wisest political leaders of the country, adept at managing the most adversarial of partners. But uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Nobody knows this better today than the patriarch of People’s Democratic Party (PDP). An avid reader of newspapers, Mufti may have laughed on December 24 after reading the headline of a leading national English daily: ‘In hung J&K house, PDP sits pretty’. Mufti is not sitting pretty. He is a very worried man. On the day of the verdict, his dilemma was that the mandate, which made his party the largest in the assembly after routing rival NC, still looked like a defeat. The election results had led to gloom in the party camp. PDP was pinning its hopes on nothing less than 35 seats, so that government formation did not become a conundrum. Post the electoral verdict, the problem for Mufti isn’t the lack of a coalition partner. It is the fear of what will come afterwards. As a PDP leader noted, every option available to the party is a dangerous compromise. Their worry is not the numbers. Everybody knows it is no longer about mathematics but everything else.
