MUJADDID ALF-I-THANI SHYAKH AHMAD SIRHINDI (rh) writes: “The gist of the discussion is that Wilayah [sainthood] is the reflection of Nubuwwah [prophethood]” [Maktubaat 2:253] Indeed Imam ‘Ali is the holder of the keys of the Sainthood, Wilayah, of the Prophet Muhammad (s) and the training regime for the status of Aqtab, Awtad and Abdaal, who are from amongst the elite Awliya, is done under the shelter of his Wilayah. The rank of Qutb al-Aqtab (Central Pole), who is the greatest Qutb and the guide and mentor of other Awliya, lays under his (‘Ali’s) feet. His orders are issued under the supervision and support of ‘Ali and the Qutb performs his duties under the supervision and help of ‘Ali and fulfills his tasks. Sayyida Fatima and both of her sons, the Imams (Hasan and Husain) share this rank with ‘Ali.” (Maktubat Volume 1:438#251) *Qutub al-Aqtab = The Cardinal Pole which is the pinnacle of the Sufi cosmographical hierarchy and forms the focus of divine supervision. In every age, the station of the cardinal pole is occupied by the waliullah most fully manifesting the Muhammadan Reality and therefore, perfected in divine attributes (al-insan al-kamel). He is bestowed the greater sainthood (Wilayat al-Kubra) and all other saints receive spiritual energy through him.
