MURDERED OF THIS DAY ............ 13th of October 1913 TOORAK ATTEMPTED MURDER. At the Prahran Police Court on the 13th of October 1913 James Ralpn Wensley aged l8 and Arthur Newton Johnson aged 19 were charged with having attempted to murder. Ah Lew Hong, a Chinese vegetable vendor, at Toorak on August 30. Ah Lew Hong, the principal witness for the, prosecution, stated that while he was serving customers on August 30 the two accused stole some fruit from his cart. He procured-a tomahawk and knife and pursued them, eventually coming up to them near a lane. The accused, who were on bicycles, rode towards him, and he asked them for his fruit. Some words followed. Then Johnson Stepped forward and fired a revolver, the bullet striking him in the knee, causing him to fall. Later more shots were tired, bullets entering his leg and stomach. He positively recognised the accused as his assailants. Dr. Forrest said the bullets in Ah Lew Hongs leg and stomach could be seen with the X rays, but could not be removed. Both tlie accused were committed for trial.
