MURMUR OF DUSK - hoàng hôn tại Hà Nội by Lain Chen Ying The sun began setting in the distant horizon, and the lake view in front of my office, began to slowly and gradually darken. The whole expanse of water began to turn a dull grey, as it tries to capture the last rays of the sun. Below, the symphony of going home is everywhere, you can hear it, u can see it, and at this very instance u can even smell it. Home......... is place where Hanoians will call it a day, and to a warm dinner with family and loved ones. To me and a few, home ....... is far-away, a distant land, where warm is still there, where my sons Eugene and Noel are. Soon Hanoians will cuddle within the warmth of their family, while we sojourners and travelers will only seek shelter. To me home....... home is back to my humble abode, an apartment where i can rest and recuperate, a place where I can hide from the world. This place is where my work problems must stop at the doorsteps, where I put down my bag of burdens of work, and enter into another realm. Inside, another set of concerns will be there for me to burden myself with. My sons, Noel and Eugene, my mom and all those loved ones at home. It is a sweet burden, though. I will chat endlessly with my talkative sons, letting them know how my day was, and in return they will tell me how theirs were. I have come to Hanoi for them, for my precious sons, who are my everything. For them i am willing to travel all over the world, and for them, I am willing to fight harder. I will save every penny for my precious. My survival is not important, theirs are. Soon twilight sets in, another night is here, the stillness of the night, except for the occasional xemay which shatter the silence. I need rest and sustenance, for tomorrow will be another new day with a new challenge. Come tomorrow morning, I will have to pick up the bag of burden that I left at my doorstep yesterday evening....... life must go on.
