MUST READ!!! Kaplan Discussion Assignment: Popular culture is all - TopicsExpress

MUST READ!!! Kaplan Discussion Assignment: Popular culture is all around us; in fact, it could be argued that this entire course emphasizes pop culture. You have defined and evaluated the major trends of 20th Century art, music, film, and literature, and you have also explored the figureheads behind theories of freedom, morality, and happiness. All of these contributions have been left behind as artifacts, telling you about the values of the past. To connect your Unit 8 discussion to cinema, consider the film The Gods Must Be Crazy. This film is a comedy devoted to the premise of discovery and meaning. While flying over a remote corner of Africa, a pilot tosses out a soda bottle. The bottle is discovered by a man who has no idea what it is. Cut off from mass media, he believes it to be a message from the gods. He and his fellow villagers try to figure out what it could possibly mean. For your response to the Unit 9 Discussion Board, imagine that someone cut off from mass culture finds an artifact from today’s culture, an item from popular culture. In your Discussion, consider the following points: 1. Explain what item you would like this person to find 2. Indicate what you hope this item would signify to them 3. Explain how you imagine this item could be interpreted. What might some of the possible uses for this item? 4. How is this item representative of pop culture? Response from Jeffery Brown (Kaplan Student) : The item of pop culture I would like to see placed in the hands of people not connected to the grid would be Kim Kardashian. Ms. Kardashian is a prime example of everything that is wrong in our society. She has a good blood line and yet lacks any talents or education that would allow her to succeed in life, and yet she is an iconic symbol of our time today. I hope the people that discovered Ms Kardashian would see the raw, non photo-shopped version of a reality star that many do, a female, mother, care giver, and leader. This individual believe it or not could be seen as hope, as much as I hate to admit it, these people could actually learn from someone who I believe has no soul. A simple high school education could actually transform the lives and education of thousands of people . The people could actually learn to read and write, communicate and create items to increase their economy. Other uses would be for much of what made her famous, entertainment, as she yelled and carried on the masses would find her amusing and listen to her not really understanding but laughing at her gestures and volume. I do not believe she would see this. Unfortunately I believe she would carry on and be a nuisance and the villagers would simply discard her and she would actually starve to death. I choose Ms Kardashian because I find she has no talent, but in the hands of people disconnected and uneducated she could be so much more. The irony of someone I do not care for being able to provide so much fascinates me. It is hard to imagine this iconic symbol providing hope to a future population, but no more than a coke bottle I guess. Ms Kardashian is a representation of pop culture, she is all over the internet, television, and print.
