MUT research among the top five 2013 research awards MUTs research is not only growing at a rapid pace; the quality is quite astounding. On 22 November 2013 the toil of the University staff came to the fore during the annual research awards. This was observed by Prof. Marcus Ramogale, DVC Academic, when he said: Our researchers are changing the situation at MUT in a very big way. They have nullified the myth about African indolence. Research Directorate Director, Dr Anette Mienie, has pointed out that MUT is doing very well in research. It was important to put things into proper perspective. Our research is of high quality; 80% of papers were published in the ISI listed journals. The 2007 – 2011 data indicates that when the impact is considered, MUT ranks among the top five universities. But this picture is obscured when only numbers of journal papers is considered. Bigger universities will publish more than smaller universities, said Dr Mienie. The most productive researcher in the Faculty of Engineering went to the Dean of the faculty, Prof Senzo Malinga CEM, who, over the past two years published five peer reviewed papers in accredited journals, both nationally and internationally, as well as presented papers internationally, and brought research income of more than R10,3 million for various research projects. The award for most productive novice researcher went to Kaniki Tumba, of the Chemical Engineering department. Associate Professor in the Department of Nature Conservation, Roger Coopoosamy, won the Senate Prize for the 16 papers he published in the past two years. Roger was also awarded for winning the best poster award at the International Conference on Advances in Plant Sciences (ICAPS 2012). Roger attracted the first Postdoctoral fellow from the NRF. Another acknowledgement went to Makhosi Buthelezi, who has been requested to name a leaf miner species that features in her research. Buthelezi is an Agricultural Scientist at the Institute for Rural Development and Community Engagement (IRDCE). Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical of Sciences, Mandla Kweyama, was acknowledged for his research paper : A fifth order differential equation for charged perfect fluids which was among the top 20 most read articles in volume 53 of the Journal of Mathematical Physics. Other acknowledgements went to Dr Georgina Arthur, of the Nature Conservation department, Dave Pons of the Agriculture department, Njabulo Gumede of Chemistry department, and Pius Owolawi of Electrical Engineering department , for their international research visits and collaborations; and Mwamba Lushiku, for leading Civil Engineering students to several victories in the annual concrete competition.
