MY BOXING COMMENT 04.05.2014. A good but predictable weekend of boxing. However for me this night of boxing was about redemption. Arthur Abraham v Nikola Sjokloca was a tough fight on paper for Abraham but he managed to win this fight via decision. Sjokloca who only had one defeat in twenty six looked impressive, however majority of the fights for Sjokloca were against journey men with losing records and Sjokloca was himself an untested paper champion that was expected to lose. Abraham did well in the fight and has redeemed himself as a worthy boxing contender in his last two fights but I still do not see Abraham being an elite fighter in the division and against the likes of Ward, Froch, Groves and even Degale I will expect Abraham to lose via majority decision. Adrian Broner v Carlos Molina was redemption for Broner after being beaten badly and embarrassingly by Maidana in his last bout as champion. However even though Broner won the fight he failed to impress me and against an aged fighter (Molina) who has not had a competitive boxing fight since 2012 I was expecting Broner to blast Molina out early and win impressively. However Broner has failed to redeem himself against Molina and based on this performance I doubt he will continue to win against any decent elite fighter like Manny Pacquiao who he keeps calling out. In my view sometimes in boxing when a one time good fighter like Broner is beaten badly in the boxing ring then this can have a devastating and damaging longterm effect on the losing boxers mind, confidence and ability in the future boxing bouts and I feel Broners loss to Maidana has had such an effect on Broner that he will never be the same young hungry boxings p4p prospect fighter ever again. Amir Khan v Luis Collazo was the best fight of the night with knock downs by both fighters. However Khan redeemed himself by winning his welterweight debut in impressive fashion. Khan displayed fancy foot work, good defence and offensive and dazzling speed and finally has started to look like the finished article and a more complete fighter with the extra weight giving him that extra power. However lets not get carried away and a win against Collazo may not have told us a great deal about Khans boxing ability under new coach Hunter and also lets not forget that Collazos best boxing performance came against the no heart and done Victor Ortiz recently and in 2006 against Ricky Hatton. I really feel that Collazo was the perfect pick to make Khan look good and Collazo was expected to lose. Collazo himself should now contemplate retirement. Whereas Khan against Mayweather would prove to be a good match up even though I dont see Khan winning and personally would prefer to see Khan v Danny Garcia if that fight could be made at welterweight. I feel Khan could win against Garcia based on Garcia last boxing performance. The Main Event Floyd Mayweather v Marcos Maidana was another win for the boxing wizard Mayweather. Maidana however has redeemed himself as a fighter since his loss to Devon Alexander and deciding to retire, he has come back with a bang with a notable win against boxings biggest pretender Broner. Maidana boxed well against Mayweather and managed to put on the pressure, cause a cut above Mayweathers eye and force talk of a rematch taking place soon. However in regards to Mayweather I felt something was missing in this fight and wonder if money, age and the fast life has finally caught up with him. Mayweather was also heard talking about retirement again and feeling it was much harder to keep motivated now a days. I still dont see any boxer beating Mayweather soon but I personally doubt his desire to continue fighting and carrying out that six fight deal before he retires. Time will tell and I hope I am wrong about Mayweathers desire and motivation to continue fighting but with nothing to prove any longer, age and lots of money it will be human nature to think whether its worth making them sacrifices anymore like painful training camps, dealing with the negative public opinions and the ruthless boxing business.
