MY LONDON DIARY After long, hectic summer to get myself relaxed I decided to visit London and Scotland from 6th to 13th of July 2013. It was my second visit in last 7 years. I chose to visit London mainly for its historic grandeur, culture and lifestyle of people. After long and tiresome journey I arrived in London and checked into my hotel The Intercontinental West minister, had my dinner at a local restaurant and went to bed early. Next day I started exploring the city of London. First I went to Buckingham palace, which was about 500 metres away from my hotel to watch the Changing of the Guards. It may be a daily event but it’s really beautifully choreographed march of guards in their bright red uniforms and bearskin hats. From there I went to Trafalgar square , which is just 15 minutes’ walk. At the centre of the square stands the 52metre high Nelson’s column flanked by four giant bronze statues of lions. It is the place where Londoners celebrate New Year with lot of fun. Then I walked along the Whitehall, street of big Government building, from where the Britain is ruled today. Then I reached at the beautiful church , Westminster Abbey. It has been the place of coronation of every monarch and also the final resting place of kings, Prime Ministers and eminent personalities. From Westminster abbey I proceeded to Parliament square, which is just a stone’s throw from Westminster Abbey. I was mesmerised by the splendour of the façade of the British parliament and Big Ben on the banks river Thames. The river Thames divides London into two parts. Both north bank and south bank are connected by many bridges like waterloo Bridge, Blackfairars Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge, London Bridge and the majestic Tower Bridge. It would not wrong to call as the city of bridges. On third day I walked along the North Bank and reached the ever gigantic St.Pauls Cathedral renowned for dodging bombs during World War II. The interior of the cathedral is simply awesome. By crossing 528 steps I reached the Golden Gallery at the very top for an unforgettable view of London. 6 hours at St.Pauls was like 6 minutes for me. Then I crossed the Millennium foot bridge to reach the South Bank. I walked along the South Bank and reached the London Eye, a gigantic wheel consisting of 32 glass enclosed capsules each holding up to 28 people which takes 30 minutes to complete one round. In the evening I took the Hop on Hop of Bus Tour for a city tour of London. The day ended with a dinner at an Indian restaurant. On 4th day I boarded a cruise boat at Westminster Pier for my journey to Greenwich on river Thames. It took 1 hour to reach Greenwich. After disembarked from the boat I went to the Royal Observatory, where you can stand on the actual meridian line. Greenwich Meridian is the world’s common zero for longitudes. While returning from the Royal Observatory, I visited Greenwich Park, Queen’s House. Greenwich is a beautiful small city. In the afternoon I returned to Westminster pier and took Barclays bicycle from the nearest docking station and proceeded towards Leicester Square and from there I went to Piccadilly circus which has the massive electronic advertising screen. From there I went to Oxford street , Harrods at Brompton road, Harvey Nicholos on Sloane street. In the evening I return to my hotel to pack my bags for next day’s trip to Scotland. During my stay in London I did not visit many places like Madam Tussad’s , Tower of London, Hyde park as I had already visited them during my last trip to London. It was as fantastic trip and I will visit London again in next summer.
