MY REFLECTIONS ON MY FATHER – DURING THE INTERMENT SERVICE IN HINTON; At dad’s memorial service in November in Illinois, a number of people spoke. We didn’t coordinate our remarks in advance. And interestingly, everyone who spoke focused their remarks on live lessons and wisdom dad imparted to them. And in the process we all learned something again from dad, and that we learned what dad taught others, not just ourselves. That also reinforces how dad was, throughout life, in his career and in retirement, an educator. And he never stopped learning, either. In retirement, he volunteered. He want on some amazing trips he never would have been able to do before while working and raising a family: to Machu Picchu; to Norway; through the Panama Canal; canoeing on the Ohio River; to the Alaska Glaciers. And we all thought he was only calling us to ask us if we knew the meaning or derivation of some word, or to look something up on the internet. It turns out he was continuously asking such questions of nearly everyone he knew. (Computers may be the one thing he never learned.) So, dad, as we now lay you to rest at last, I hope I speak for everyone when I promise you that we will take the lessons you taught us so well, and we will keep applying them throughout our days, and we will pass them on to the next generations as well. Thank you, dad. I miss you every day.
