MY TOP 21 ROBIN WILLIAMS SCENES -- I cant think of anything to really say about Robin Williams that hasnt already been said. He left behind a body of work that probably provides more insight into the man than any interview ever did. For my money, its no mere coincidence that the stereotypical Robin Williams movie was almost always a feel-good message movie about bucking authority or doing the right thing. People assume that because Doug and I poked fun at his formulaic films, we somehow didnt like his work. Not true. Among other things, I liked Good Will Hunting, Fisher King, Hook, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Birdcage, Hamlet, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia. Toys, Night at the Museum, Happy Feet, and Death to Smoochy are guilty pleasures. Even in bad films -- the ones that really get on my nerves -- theres almost always a moment that sticks out. A single second where you just melt in the fire of his infectious performance. Some people have been asking me what my favorite Williams moments are. So I decided Id share them. Consider this my tribute, I guess. WARNING: Theyre REALLY random. These are moments that are personal TO ME. For whatever reason, theyve stayed in my head over the years. Some are classics that everyone talks about, others are just fragments that speak to some weird little part of ME for some reason. But I thought Id share nonetheless. 21. The Merchant Scene from Aladdin -- Williams was a consummate storyteller. And its on full display here. While the Genie gets all the credit from fans, his alter ego (also probably the Genie) is actually more impressive. He sets up the whole story and the tone of the film. Its a tall order, flawlessly delivered. youtube/watch?v=inzkJ34VMfk 20. Being Human -- Macabre stuff. The facial expressions on Williams face as Turturro asks him to die with him is hilarious. Culminating in one of the greatest Williams glares at 1:34. youtube/watch?v=S2zUQdHRcFU 19. One Hour Photo -- That awesome moment when you remember that Williams is totally an anime fan. Oddly appropriate that its Evangelion -- a story foremost about mechas and depression. youtube/watch?v=V5FmFaK7pMU 18. Mrs. Doubtfire Marital Argument -- well acted argument. But its the 1:40 mark that gets me. The look on his face is heartbreaking. youtube/watch?v=RyRvL58gpxo 17. Mrs. Doubtfire Transformation -- this whole montage just gets me every time. The three of them look like theyre having a blast. youtube/watch?v=X8Lu9lt40K0 16. Awakenings The Joy of Life -- 1:09. Something about the way he says How good WHAT is, Leonard? It always struck me as sad. youtube/watch?v=JvWTcXKFLBU 15. Dont Worry Be Happy -- Id love to think that no one really knew why Williams was there. Not true, of course. But itd be hilarious if he just walked on set from another movie and started goofing off for no reason. youtube/watch?v=d-diB65scQU 14. The Birdcage John Wayne -- Williams whips out his John Wayne impression. But its the dry read at 0:53 that makes the joke perfect. youtube/watch?v=JuASKA1yxp8 13. Fisher King Dinner Scene -- Its easy to forget that Williams was capable of doing silent comedy. The first half of this scene is brilliant. And the singing from 2:38 on is touching. youtube/watch?v=BvSl3Ny_R4I 12. Good Will Hunting Park Bench -- Its classic. Though not my favorite from the movie. Definitely a powerful scene, though. youtube/watch?v=qM-gZintWDc 11. Hook There You Are, Peter -- His facial expressions are so innocent. But its actually the strange exhaustion he displays from 1:49 on that grabs me. His begging for help is one of the most sincere moments in an often wacky performance. youtube/watch?v=T0jVCDHE6pI 10. Hook Insults at Dinner -- Just Williams doing what he does best. I love it for the paramecium bit. Never fails to make me laugh. youtube/watch?v=JsJxIoFu2wo 9. Good Will Hunting Superphilosophy -- THIS is my favorite scene in GWH. As a married man, I can tell you its all true. And Williams delivers it with pure honesty. youtube/watch?v=TPOpk-4AqZQ 8. Toys Trailers -- This movie IS my childhood. I was so hyped for this film, and thats thanks to these unique trailers. Theyve still stuck with me all these years and just scream nostalgia to me. youtube/watch?v=j39lYCi2itI youtube/watch?v=EwVqtzoBNSM 7. Dead Poets Society Your verse -- I actually have a love/hate relationship with this film. Chunks of it just bug the crap out of me. But I actually like Williams in it. The script not so much. Not a fan of the infamous O Captain My Captain scene either. Give me THIS bit any day: youtube/watch?v=R_zsMwCOoEs 6. Insomnia Shared Secret -- WARNING: SPOILERS! The performance here is chilling Quiet. Regretful. On the verge of losing it. I just wanted to stop her from laughing. Gives me goosebumps. youtube/watch?v=V4Ygr0My7oE 5. Mork and Mindy Mixed Emotions -- God I loved this show. Used to watch it on Nick at Nite as a kid. You want a tough one to get through? Try watching this clip from 1:36 to 2:15. Its almost impossible not to let the waterworks fly. https://youtube/watch?v=T0H2g-J0Awk 4. Hook Found Marbles -- I know its random. But its that laugh. At 0:11 seconds. Its just so sincere. My favorite moment in the movie. youtube/watch?v=SOD4FlyoKSg 3. Why Robin Williams Named His Daughter Zelda -- Yes, its a Nintendo commercial. And yet this one probably makes me the most misty eyed. No joke. The eyes get watery. The tragedy hits home when you see both the two of them interacting. Not only are they both adorkable together, but it makes you realize what a fun nerd we all lost in the process. Yes, Williams was an avid gamer as well. And realizing that one of the two people you see on-screen isnt there any more is just PAINFUL. Gaming alone just isnt the same. youtube/watch?v=wcZhY_Zo-yg 2. A.I. Dr. Know -- I actually enjoyed his character in A.I. However, its not his Genie style antics that got me. Its the solid, straight read of the Yeats poem that did it. No trace of irony. No antics. Its a disturbingly quiet moment that he creates AFTER all the noisy build up. Like a moment of silence in a rowdy room. Its just jarring. Its my favorite scene in the movie. Mostly cause I think its the heart and soul of the film. youtube/watch?v=lu4weTeDgfw 1. The Spark of Madness -- As always... a consummate storyteller. In this stand-up routine, Williams plays an older version of himself ranting away. Knowing what we know now, I think it may be the most haunting thing he ever did: Youre only given a little spark of madness... and if you lose that? Youre nothing. youtube/watch?v=l2SliEAGamw
