Maat = Libra Although she was often personified, Ma´at is perhaps best understood as an idea, rather than a goddess, but she was central to conceptions of the universe, balance and divine order in Ancient Egypt. The name Ma´at is generally translated as that which is straight or truth but also implies order, balance and justice. Thus Ma´at personified perfect order and harmony. Libra was known in Babylonian astronomy as MUL Zibanu (the scales or balance), or alternatively as the Claws of the Scorpion. The scales were held sacred to the sun god Shamash, who was also the patron of truth and justice. Balance and harmony are at the heart of the astrological sign of Libra. Balance is inherent in the symbol of the scales. Harmony is inherent in Libra’s ruling planet of Venus. The values of balance and harmony transcend cultures and historical periods and are found in the wisdom texts of ancient civilizations from China to Rome, and in the oral traditions of indigenous peoples.
