Macedonia! This is a carnival in Vevcani! This is pure primitiveness! Animal lovers among them underage children, wrote us about the incident which they had witnessed. Namely, at today’s carnival in the village of Vevcani, several young men in their twenties had been holding a stick with a dead dog’s body stuck on it (The dead dog had been abandoned from the owners and had been fed by the local people fond of animals) they had been hitting the dog, but it had not been only them, the dead dog had been hit by whoever passed by them. The dog has been already dead, but the witnesses are not sure if the death occurred during this barbaric act or it had been killed before. At the end, they had thrown the dog’s lifeless body in the fire! Also, witnesses had confirmed that live chickens had been stabbed on pitchforks and so killed. As an Animal Protection Association, and as moral, sensitive human beings, we are utterly appalled by this morbid act. We are asking the relevant institutions to act in accordance with the Law on animal protection and the Criminal Law and to investigate thoroughly this case. Most probably there are video footages and pictures of this event that can be found. We cannot imagine the trauma and the pain that these animals were put through. These events were traumatizing for the visitor of this carnival as well, particularly for the children. We are asking what did this carnival want to achieve, and what is the message they wanted to pass on? Is this the tradition that they are cherishing? How can ridiculing a helpless animal death be a subject of culture? Is that humane? Should this event be called cultural, and sponsored and promoted by the Government of Republic of Macedonia and its Ministry of Culture? We suggest that psychologists seriously examine the mental structure of these people involved in this animal killing for mere exhibitionism, for it has been proved that those capable of torturing animals, easily resort to violent behavior towards people. Once again, we appeal this case to be seriously considered, and the criminals brought to justice and punished accordingly.
