Maeve Turpin October 22 life was completely normal and healthy for a 15 year old girl until a few minutes before the school day was over. Maeve had a tonic clonic seizure, a grand mal, in her classroom. She woke to administrators, teachers, paramedics and mom all standing over her. She took her first ambulance ride to the hospital where a ct scan, blood work and other tests revealed nothing. In fact the doctor suggested that she may have just fainted. That was a Tuesday. The next two days went ok but Friday morning the 25th she went to the school nurse feeling that her legs felt light. She hung around there for about an hour and then decided to call me to get her. She said she couldnt concentrate or think right and wanted to come home. 15 minutes later she had her second tonic clonic. A four minute seizure. That trip to the Er resulted in seizure medications. On Sunday the 27 she had what was probably a partial seizure where she stayed awake and it did not escalate. Tuesday the 29th neurologist diagnosed her with epilepsy and a medical and personal safety plan was put into action. She is on day 6 seizure free. Those days are very important to count because every day seizure free is one day closer to getting off meds (2 years), being able to drive again(6 months) and getting life back to normal. Every seizure from here on out will reset that clock back to the beginning. We are praying for no more seizures. 3 million people in the US have a seizure disorder, about 20 students at Pope high school. It is not a rare condition but most people know nothing about it. Myth #1- someone having a seizure will NOT swallow their tongue. Never put anything in their mouth.
