Magazine: Garrett hospital a top performer among Maryland facilities FOR THE CUMBERLAND TIMES-NEWS OAKLAND — Garrett County Memorial Hospital was recognized among the top 10 performers by Consumer Reports in a recent publication. The September issue of magazine published the surgical safety ratings on all qualifying acute care hospitals in the country. Garrett County Memorial scored in the best top 10 in the state, tied for tenth place, and was one of only 16 Maryland hospitals with a better than average rating. There are 55 hospitals in Maryland. Consumer Reports introduced the new hospital surgery rating system, giving safety ratings for 2,464 qualifying hospitals in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The rating process grouped 86 most common surgical procedures in 27 different categories and then rated the hospitals on two major outcomes. Data and methodology can be found on the Consumer Reports website, consumerreports.org. Maryland Hospital Association endorsed the Consumer Reports rating system as a “reasonable way to think about two outcomes that are of most concern to patients, the risk for death and longer than expected hospital stays.” Don Battista, president and CEO of GCMH, credits local surgeons and physicians, as well as an excellent employee group, that strives to meet the highest standards of patient care.
