Mahindra seems to think her 2 day old babies are ready to eat - TopicsExpress

Mahindra seems to think her 2 day old babies are ready to eat mice. Last night, she took her mice (dinner) into the nest box and put them in with the babies. Now, 24 hours later, she has been eating kibble, and the mice are still untouched. I had to remove them before they got nasty. The babies are all doing well. Since yesterday, they have all gained appropriate amounts of weight. The 2 largest ones gained a little over 2 grams, while the smallest gained 1.4 grams. All are nice and plump, and all are active. Mahindra is a very dedicated mom. Both yesterday and today, when I removed her from the cage to clean up the litter pan and weigh the babies, I shut her in my bedroom. When I went back to get her, she shot out of the room like a bullet and headed straight for her mommy cage. She even climbed up and got into the cage by herself. After looking in on the babies to make certain they are OK, she turned to give me the evil eye, and stood guard outside the nest box until I shut the cage and put a cover over part of it. Then she immediately went in to be with the babies. This is actually fairly normal behavior for ferret moms, although some are a little less protective with me. No new pictures today - maybe tomorrow. With Gioia Kerlin and Bajnok Ferret Kennel.
