MaiTV will not be affected by the suspension by World Rugby of the TV coverage of 2014 HSBC Dubai Sevens tournament starting tomorrow. MaiTV Chair Justin Smith says they received the exemption, because the coverage is too costly and not profitable for the broadcaster. ‘’MaiTV had sort exemption from taking the feed, for the entire sevens package, we made our interest to be exempted from the Gold Cost Sevens, unfortunately we didn’t get approval for that, and we did seek approval for being exempted for this particular tournament, Dubai Sevens leg and the future of the sevens, because we see no personal gain, and advertising gain for the company’’. Smith says the exemption was given to them by the department of communications two days ago. Meanwhile, the Government says it is working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the country will receive free-to-air coverage of the 2014 Dubai 7s tournament, which kicks-off tomorrow. World Rugby has suspended TV coverage claiming a breach of the broadcast agreement with Fiji Television Limited. Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last night said he attended a meeting with Fiji TV Chief Executive Tevita Gonelevu and Fijian Holdings board members to address the issue. FBC News has spoken to World Rugby (formally known as International Rugby Board) which has said they will not comment on the matter as yet. The government has sent a letter to World Rugby outlining the Cross Carriage Decree which came into effect in May this year. The decree expands access to coverage of important televised events, including sports, by requiring all of Fiji’s free-to-air television broadcasters to air them. - See more at: fbc.fj/fiji/25009/maitv-exempted-from-live-rugby-coverage-#sthash.hhd9jn46.dpuf
