Main Street Bridge projects added, approved By BOB MARTIN bmartin@citizen LACONIA — The City Council approved three components of the Main Street Bridge project during its meeting Monday night. The total cost of the components amounts to $49,050. Construction on the bridge is scheduled to start in the spring. City Manager Scott Myers said R.M. Piper, Inc., a general contracting company out of Plymouth, was chosen for the job. Bids, which were put out in late fall, closed in December. Myers said there was “tight bidding” on the project, as two of the bids came within around $15,000 of each other. The total project came in at approximately $3.3 million in construction, 80 percent of which will be paid for by the state, according to Myers. However, Myers went on to explain that there are three components of the project that are not scheduled to receive matching funds from the state and will be footed by the city. These include bridge widening, bump-outs and overlooks, and ornamental lighting. The bridge widening aspect came into bid at $23,500, much lower than anticipated. The estimated cost was between $50,000 and $55,000. At $6.800, the bumps and overlooks also came in lower than expected, compared to the estimated amount of $10,000. Ornamental lighting came in slightly higher at $18,750, compared to $15,000. In total, the $49,050 was much lower than the originally-estimated amount, which ranged between $75,000 and $80,000. The three components of the project are not scheduled to receive matching funds because they are considered to be above and beyond the scope of work needed for a straight replacement project, according to Myers.
