Mair Music frae Scotland—The Proclaimers, Craig and Charlie Reid, had a monster hit with “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” released in ‘88—big enough to be ridiculed by Chandler Bing on “Friends” in a preposterous pseudo-Scots brogue…The song of theirs that really kills, though, is the title track from the same LP, their second, “Sunshine on Leith.” You don’t have to’ve been brocht up in the Free Kirk of Scotland to appreciate the way the bros hit that harmony in the line “While the Chief [pause] puts sunshine on Leith…” “While I’m worth [pause] my room on this earth” seems like a very Scottish concept too; nothing on their website about how they’re going to be voting today, however.
