Maithil Brahmins are a Hindu Brahmincommunity from the Mithila region of Indiaand Nepal. They are one of the five Pancha-Gauda Brahmin communities.[1] In India, the Maithil Brahmins reside mainly in Bihar and the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh,Jharkhand and West Bengal. In Nepal, they mostly reside in the Terai region. They are noted for panjis, the extensive genealogical records maintained for the last twenty-four generations. Like many other Hindu castes, the Maithil Brahmins trace their origin in the legends ofRamayana. During the Mughal period, they migrated westwards to the Braj region. The religious practices of the Maithil Brahmins are a mixture of orthodox Hinduism and animism.[3] They worship Shakti in various forms; some are also Shaivites andVaishnavites.
