Majid Ali Mahesar Lecturer in GeographyGDC Pir Jo Goth “Geography Is TheMother Of All Sciences” Geography is the mother of all sciences due to its links and influences on a range of other scientific fieldsincluding biology, mathematics, anthropology, geology, astronomy and chemistry. The exploration and discovery of new places, new ideas and new cultures is something that is fundamental to the humanknowledge. Thus, geography is often called the mother of all sciences as studying other people and other places led to other scientific fields such as Geology, Geomorphology, Meteorology, Oceanography,Pedology, biology, anthropology, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, among others. The subject of Geography provides wealth of information and advanced knowledge of the earths surface. Geography is both a natural science and a social science as it examines people and their environmentand serves as a bridge between the physical and cultural worlds.Geography is defined as the science that studies Earth and its land, inhabitants, features and phenomena. The term was coined by Eratosthenes between 276 and 194 BC and has been in common use ever since. Thefield of geography was historically categorized into four different subject areas. These areas were; the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena, research in earth sciences, the study of man-land relationships and area studies.A moremodern breakdown of geography is into a number of different branches. These branches often include physical geography, human geography, technical Geography, environmental geography, regional geography and geomatics. The most commondivision made is between human geography and physical geography. Human geography is the branch that focuses its attention on the study of processes and patterns that shape and determinehumans interaction with a variety of environments. Attention to detail is on humans affect on the landscape, rather than the physical landscape itself.Human geographers work in the fields of urban and regional planning, transportation, marketing, real estate, tourism, and international business. Humangeography can then be broken down into a number of categories including culturalgeography, economic geography, health geography and religion geography. Physicalgeography focuses primarily on geography as Earth sciences. It considers issuesand problems in the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and pedosphere as well as withinflora and fauna.Physical geographers study patterns of climates, landforms, vegetation, soils, and water. They forecast the weather, manage land and water resources, and analyzeand plan for forests, rangelands, and wetlands.Again, this can be categorized by a number of different topics including biogeography, coastal geography and oceanography. Technical geography encompasses the technical skills of geography including mapping and data analysis. GeographicInformation Systems (GIS) have enabled geographers to merge these technical skills. Manyhuman and physicalgeographers have skills in technical geography, which includes cartography (mapping), remote sensing (earth images fromsuch sources as planes and satellites) and Geographical Information System (storage and manipulation of digital spatial dataand its attributes). The immediate future will be a time of explosive growth in the development and use of this emerging branch. Thevast range of topics and sciences that are covered and understood by geography give rise to its commondefinitions as the mother of all sciences.Geography is also a discipline that integrates a wide variety of subject matter. Almost any area of human knowledge can be examined from a spatial perspective. Figure describes some of the mainsub disciplines within human and physical geography. Physical geographys primary subdisplinesstudy the Earths atmosphere (meteorology and climatology), animal and plant life (biogeography), physical landscape (geomorphology), soils (pedology), and waters (hydrology). Some of thedominant areas of study in human geography include: human society and culture (social and cultural geography), behavior (behavioral geography), economics (economic geography), politics (political geography), and urban systems (urbangeography).Geography is the mother of all subjects because it is the only subject where you can learn an awful lot aboutanything and everything.Geography is the bridge between the human and physical sciences and the mother of all sciences. Geography is thestudy of the Earth, itsPhysical and Human Environments and their interactions. Geography looks at the spatial connection between people, places, and the earth.“We like to say geography is the mother of all disciplineswith today’s globaleconomy, geographic literacy is becoming an essential life skill. Professionals in countless fields collaborate with peers inother countries. Understanding, foreign cultures –as well as their systems of government, measurement, communicationand currency –is crucial for effective teamwork. “Geographic illiteracy impacts our economic well-being, our relationshipswith other nations and the environment, and isolates us from the world”In my home country Pakistan, few of people who know how the Geography is important in our life and many of them donot know that, theyhave one idea about it that is the Geography study the Countries, Climate, and Relief. Actually, that isnot the only thing that Geography studied. It can study all the problems in our life and get the solutions, also studies all thefeatures (Natural Features and Human Features), and every time in solving the problem, tryto get theanswers for threeimportant questions at first. These questions are: (How, Why and When). Also, Geography can study through many of other sciences; they can be studied by the perspective of geography. For examples, Political Science, Economy, Statistics,Military, Agriculture, Navigation, Hydrology, Civilizations, Ecology, Tourism, Remote Sensing, Medical, Health Sciences, and others. So, that why we can say that Geography is the mother of all sciences. I want for that look in my country to havea chance to change, to be known howmuch Geography is important, the science which leads the people to discover our planet and our aerospace, in the past and in the future.
