Major Bantams ready for local games Posted on December 3, 2013 by Grant McDaniel Port Hawkesbury Reporter......Grant McDaniel PORT HAWKESBURY- Following a big four-point weekend, the Nova Junior X-Men (12-6-1) are getting ready for a local tour as the Major Bantams are lined up to play their next four games at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre. On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Western Hurricanes (13-3-2) are in town for a 5 p.m. start. On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Newbridge Senators (3-14-2) take the puck drop at 2 p.m. The following weekend, the Halifax Bubba Rays (15-3) will be in town for a pair. The Saturday game is at 5 p.m. and the Sunday game is at 2 p.m. “We’re in Port Hawkesbury for the next four games,” said Major Bantam coach Troy Chiasson. “We got Western and Newbridge coming in, and both are tough teams. Then we got the second place team, the Bubba Rays, coming. This is two big weekends for the Novas. “Home ice is always a big difference, and this will be a good measuring stick as to where we’re at now.” The Major Bantams were a force to contend with last weekend, dropping Kings Mutual 7-1 on Saturday and the Scotsburn Crushers 9-2 on Sunday. The Saturday game was in Port Hawkesbury, and the Sunday game was in Pictou. The Saturday game saw Avery Warner lead scoring with three goals and two assists. Blair Fraser had two helpers, and single goals were scored by Spencer Barron, Braden Murray, Cory MacLellan, and James Walker. Fearghus MacDonald, Keenan Gillis, Nicholas Deagle, and Ryan MacLellan had assists. Junior X-Man Peter Kopf faced 29 shots. Replying for Kings Mutual was James Hunter, and Paul Janes faced 30 shots. “On Saturday, in terms of puck possession, that might have been our best game of the year,” the coach said. The Sunday game saw Warner work his usual magic, popping three goals and three assists. Cory MacLellan had two goals and three assists, while Braden Murray had two goals. Keegan Gillis had a goal and an assist, while Spencer Barron had two assists. James Walker scored, and both Ryan MacLellan and Nicholas Deagle had helpers. Colton Ellis stopped 23 of 25 shots. Scoring for the Crushers were Kevin Mason and Tim Shea. Three different goalies took to the net for the hosts. “It seemed like everything we shot went in,” Coach Chiasson said. The Junior X-Men currently have three players in the league’s top five scorers. Warner is the top man with 20 goals and 20 assists in 16 games; in fourth place is Barron, with 16 goals and 17 assists in 19 games; and in fifth is Cory MacLellan, with 11 goals and 22 assists in 19 games
