Major Fire Updates Emergency Warning - State Mine Fire (Lithgow and Blue Mountains) 19/10/13 20:02 Posted: 19/10/2013 A large bush fire is burning between Lithgow and Bilpin. There is a threat to properties in areas including Bell and Dargan, and Berambing and Bilpin. Current Situation There are two areas covered by an emergency warning: IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA AROUND BILPIN The fire has crossed Tootie Creek and is moving towards Bilpin and is threatening properties in the area. If you are west of Mountain Lagoon Road (on the Lithgow side) seek shelter as the fire impacts to protect yourself from the heat of the fire. If you are east of Mountain Lagoon Road (on the Kurrajong side), leave now if the path is clear towards Kurrajong. IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA OF BELL OR DARGAN Fire activity has also intensified near the communities of Dargan and Bell. There is a threat to properties in this area. If you are in this area, seek shelter as the fire impacts. Protect yourself from the heat of the fire. The Bells Line of Road is closed in a number of locations. Whilst the fire is burning at a low intensity there is a lot of smoke moving across the area. Current Situation Fire activity has intensified in the area around Muru Avenue and St Columbas High School at Springwood. There is thick smoke in the area. Be alert to burning embers. Put out any spot fires which start where you are. Firefighters and helicopters are working in the area. Follow the advice of firefighters on the scene. An emergency alert is being sent to people in this area. NSW Health has evacuated Springwood Hospital as a precaution. 24 patients have been transferred to Nepean Private Hospital where they will remain until further notice. The Ruttleys Road Fire has burnt more than 2,700 hectares of bushland. Current Situation Backburning operations are continuing under favourable conditions along Campbell Dr and Elizabeth Bay Dr in Conservation Sector. The threat has reduced to properties in Chain Valley Bay North, Gwandalan and Summerland Point communities following successful backburning operations in these areas. Firefighters are continuing to backburn in the Munmorah State Conservation Area from the Pacific Highway to Birdie Beach Drive. There is a potential threat to properties in Elizabeth Bay Drive, Lake Munmorah. Aproximately 80 firefighters are on scene. Munmorah State Conservation Area is closed due to the fire activity. Crews are stengthening back burns and mopping up around Catherine Hill Bay, Nords Wharf and Cams Wharf - where the threat to properties has reduced but still remains. There are reports that some properties have been damaged or destroyed. Current Situation The Hank Street Fire has been burning under difficult weather conditions and has burnt over 5,000 hectares of bushland. This fire is still active and is currently burning in the area of Tomago Road, near the industrial development. Where conditions allow crews have been conducting backburning. Containment is now at around 90%. There is potential for the fire to spread into the Botanical Gardens if containment lines are breached. Watch and Act - Hall Road Fire, Balmoral Village (Southern Highlands / Wollondilly) 19/10/13 20:06 Posted: 19/10/2013 A fire is continuing to burn near the villages of Balmoral, Yanderra, Bargo, Pheasants Nest, Wilton, Hill Top and Yerrinbool in the Southern Highlands. Current Situation Wilson Drive, Balmoral is currently closed between Balmoral Village and Hill Top due to fire activity. There is a potential threat to properties on the eastern side on Wilson Drive, 4km north of Hill Top. To avoid the road closure, residents of Hilltop are advised to head south to Mittagong, residents of Balmoral should travel north to Buxton. An uncontained fire has burnt over 9,300 hectares, crossing Picton Road and is burning within the Sydney Catchment area near Macarthur Drive, Wilton. The fire has crossed the railway line where it crosses the freeway at Yerrinbool. The rail line was reopened this morning. Where conditions allow crews have been backburning to strengthening containment lines, this work will continue today. There will be increased activity from both ground and air crews. Some of this burning is very close to residential buildings. Crews are working to have containment lines in place before the arrival of warm, windy weather forecast for Sunday. If you live in Balmoral or Bargo Residents are now able to return to their properties. Significant backburing operations will take place around Bargo and Balmoral. Current Situtation The fire is burning in the Grose Valley, and is approaching the Great Western Highway from the north near Berghoffers Pass. The fire has not crossed the Great Western Highway to the west. Darling Causeway is closed in both directions. There is significant smoke throughout the area from Katoomba to Glenbrook and beyond.
