Major General Benjamin Butler, The Union must and shall be preserved. The Union was tyranny then. It is a thousand times worse now. Why must it be preserved? The purpose of the Constitution was to make a more perfect Union. Is what we have today a more perfect Union? It has become a more perfect tyranny. The national government cannot claim our allegiance and support under the Constitution when it has no allegiance to the Constitution or to preserving our Liberty.
