Major RANT alert and yes I hope to push some buttons. This post (https://facebook/fitnessandnutritionadvisor/posts/439500742857384) popped up on my timeline recently which points out a fairly well accepted idea that too many people jump to gluten as a first port of call when altering someones nutrition. There is little controversy here and as can be seen in the comments it is a useful thing to point out, many people waste precious time and energy jumping on the gluten bandwagon instead of seeking further advice or putting energy into a more effective strategy. However, the reason for this post are the attacks/condemnations against the author of the post saying that he was wrong to name particular people who have written in popular media outlets about this subject. As if by naming them he has somehow undermined his integrity... well... WHAT A COMPLETE AND UTTER LOAD OF CRAP. If you are reading this you will probably know I rarely if ever name names but I am in no-way opposed to people doing so as long as the discussion focuses on the SCIENCE/EVIDENCE rather than resorting to name calling and questioning of character. Note I said, character... not motives. Let me put this in some context... What has happened here is one PT has questioned the PUBLICLY promoted practice/advice of other PTs. Note... he did not take something from behind closed doors to air it. A few comparable cases of this: Peer reviewed research: Within research there are OFTEN different camps or trains of thought and researchers will name, reference and intelligently deconstruct the opposing view. Especially when it is hideously flawed. Ben Goldacre, Bad Science: MANY of the people I see using the word haters to describe those who question their.... questionable practice are the same people who tell their clients, friends, followers to read this book! Delve inside this book and you find 2 ENTIRE chapters devoted to naming and shaming other practitioners based on their credentials and practice. Gary Taubes: Many people are happy to slate the likes of Gary Taubes despite him being infinitely more intelligent and successful than they are because of his incorrect hypothesis that carbohydrates make us fat. He will always be known for this despite his views slowly evolving over the years... perhaps still not enough though but again, PTs etc are happy to slate him, even though the GOOD he has done for the industry is immeasurable. This brings me onto my final point... The notion of: But we are all here to help people. I posted the following YouTube video: (youtu.be/tM5pvLj7B_c?t=2m11s) ...but was told these people are not trying to help people. I totally disagree, despite how misguided some people are, they are often trying to help people with their whacky beliefs. But it would be ridiculous to say that I should not point out that this is wrong and in doing so hopefully re-educate the practitioner (unlikely) or help those who might fall prey to this incorrect thinking (more likely). Therefore, if someone calls themselves evidence based and talks about bad science then they should be humble enough to admit when their practice can be unpicked with new (or old) research. If someone admits, this is completely based on opinion, its not fact, I dont know why it works... but it works... then how can one argue? But this is NOT the case here... Similarly, to say this is what I used to think but my thinking has now changed is cool... but again, that has NOT happened here. What annoys me most is the fan boys who choose to ignore the evidence and focus on some ridiculous morale high ground that doesnt exist. That post, and posts like it are not inappropriate or derogatory, they serve a purpose which would be much more effective it people stopped being babies and learn how to have intellectual debate. Something for the fan boys to consider about their gurus: A broken clock is right twice a day.
