Major anxiety in Shantalla as residents fear rise in burglaries – Deacy Stretched Garda resources are leaving many homeowners in Galway city vulnerable to break-ins. Newly selected Fianna Fáil local election candidate Nicola Deacy has said the issue of burglaries is a major concern in Shantalla and other communities in the city. The 28 year old explained, “I have been shocked by the number of residents in Shantalla that I have met who are terrified by the scale of burglaries in the area in recent months. I know people who left their house for a very short period of time and came back to find it has been burgled. Some of these break-ins are happening early in the evening. Many residents are genuinely fearful for their personal safety and for home security. They need the reassurance of increased garda patrols in the community. “As we know, community garda resources in Galway have been reduced dramatically over the past 18 months. Last year alone, the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter shut down 10 garda stations in Co Galway and it has put further pressure on garda resources in the city. We need to have strong deterrents in place so that criminal gangs can’t terrorise our communities. But the cuts being imposed on our local gardaí are having a major impact. There is huge regard for gardaí in our community but the reality is that their resources are stretched to the limit. “Fianna Fáil has called on Minister Shatter to ask the Garda Commissioner to carry out a full audit of the areas and units within An Garda Síochána that need extra resources. I think there is a strong case to make for extra garda resources in Galway. “Shantalla is a very close-knit community and these break-ins are simply not acceptable. I want people to feel safe in their own homes and to be able to go to the local shop or to call to a neighbour without worrying about their house being burgled.”
