Make your OWN ASSESMENT! When I was coaching, I would each year have ladies coming up from previous schools and coaches. I recall one young lady in particular that gave her previous coach a hard time, he then came to me and began to tell me all the bad qualities of this young lady, and I held up my hand and stopped him in the middle of his rant. I told him coach I’m sorry that you feel this way toward this individual, however let me get to make my OWN assessment of her once she begins to play for me. I didn’t want to already have a preconceived thought of this young lady…..I mean I had no idea, what background she had, what kind of home she came from, if she had be abused, etc….you get the picture. To make a long story short, she became one of the best basketball players that I have ever coached. I often looked forward to games because I knew she would give her all! A lot of times we allow other people’s opinion to make our assumption of another person, when in fact once we get to know that person they are nothing like what they were described to be. Make your own assessment of people and value the time getting to know them, they may just be the one that will be that helping hand in the time of need....and some may even turn out to be your best friend.
