Makeevka local Marina urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit war-torn areas of eastern Ukraine instead her upcoming visit to Kiev, Wednesday. Makeevka, located in Ukraines Donetsk region, has been hit by ongoing bombardment by Kiev forces, resulting in a rising death toll. Merkel is due to arrive in Kiev on Saturday to meet with President Poroshenko and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk for talks regarding the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. Marina, Makeevka resident: Opinion? What opinion should I have? I have no idea… It would be better if she (Merkel) came here first because here is where there is fighting. For example, they are shooting at people, ruined homes, people have no place to work or to live in, nothing at all. She could observe, drive through the towns, speak with people, see what is happening here: killing, injured, children, old people, how we live here. People have nothing to eat, we get no salaries, no pensions. Everything is closed: mines, factories, everything! People take shelter in basements, there was just one such an explosion - people are still hiding. The town is in ruins, they are everywhere. On the northern part of our city near the railway station seven people were killed yesterday. Today my friend was standing at a bus station at 5 a.m. and a shell hit right in her apartment. Her husband stayed at home to watch after their flat but there is nothing to watch after: everything is broken. So they should come here with Poroshenko to observe and to film the situation.
