MakersFactory & UCSC Present: Monterey Bay Marine Science Minecraft Mod A Deep Dive Into Marine and Ocean Science Education and Conservation MakersFactory, in collaboration with UCSC and marine research and education institutions such as MBARI, are developing a Monterey Bay marine-themed modification for MinecraftEdu. MinecraftEdu is a modified version of the original smash hit game Minecraft, played by over 30 million people worldwide. Teachers use MinecraftEdu to teach subjects like math, science, engineering, humanities, biology and more. The Monterey Bay Marine Science Mod, built for MinecraftEdu, is an exploratory game where students learn about marine life in the ocean and life on the shores. In Minecraft’s “Survival Mode” -- which focuses on resource management mechanics -- students can make decisions in game that can help sea life thrive and prevent destructive impacts from human activity. In “MinecraftEdu Mode” -- which focuses on exploring and experimenting with the game world -- students can observe sea life, interact with famous ocean scientists, or visit in-game marine education institutions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Seymour Marine Discovery Center, or the NOAA Sanctuary Exploration Center. Ultimately, students discover the extraordinary life on our oceans and what we can do to protect the sea life. Target Audience: The Monterey Bay Marine Science Minecraft Mod aims to reach students in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Curriculum and content inside the mod will follow the Common Core standards and educate students on relevant science, engineering, and historical topics. Because this game is being built in MinecraftEdu any student, school or institution with a Minecraft Server/account can play this mod. Content & Curriculum: Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is a federally protected marine area offshore of Californias central coast. The sanctuary contains our nations largest kelp forests and one of North Americas largest underwater canyons and closest-to-shore deep ocean environments. Its diverse marine ecosystem also includes rugged rocky shores, wave-swept sandy beaches and tranquil estuaries. These habitats harbor an incredible variety of marine life including 34 species of marine mammals, more than 180 species of seabirds and shorebirds, at least 525 species of fishes, and an abundance of invertebrates and algae. Known as the Serengeti of the Sea, this remarkably productive marine environment is fringed by spectacular coastal scenery including sand dunes, rocky cliffs, rolling hills and steep mountains. Human activity has been having a negative impact on our oceans and the sea life. Over fishing, pesticides from farms, plastics, and other pollutants are also having a negative impact. To stop the damage to our oceans and protect the sea life, students are given challenges to stop the destructive behavior or find ways to help the sea life. The Monterey Bay Marine Science Minecraft Mod teaches students to become citizens and advocates for the ocean. In this collaborative education and survival-based collaborative games, students use marine science knowledge to neutralize negative forces that are destroying our oceans and the sea life. Students become educated through in-game lessons, challenges, interactions and observations. They are tasked with stopping behavior that is destructive and implementing plans that will help sea life and protect animals. Challenges are many and students learn quickly that they can not sit back and do nothing to save our ocean life - in the Monterey Bay Marine Science Minecraft Mod, students become advocates for the ocean! 877 Ceder St. #122 Santa Cruz, Ca 95060 (831)-600-1024 makersfactory
