Making a law preventing parents spanking children was big news - TopicsExpress

Making a law preventing parents spanking children was big news last week. One of the most common excuses parents offered was they only spank in dangerous situations such as their child running across a road. I called bullshit and then on Saturday it happened to me. And guess what.......................... at no point did I even consider hitting my little girl. The thought simply did not enter my head. I quickly called out STOP. She stopped. I took her by the hand and lead her safely back to the curb. I crouched down to her level and asked her if she realised what she just did. She said “i crossed the road without looking”. Exactly I said. Then i proceeded to reiterate the consequences of not looking, using her new found understanding of death to help cement the seriousness of it. Then we spent some time retracing our steps and trying it again, i asked her to show me the proper way of crossing a road. Then at different times during the remainder of the day I asked her to repeat the rules for crossing the street. Good parenting, like so many aspects of life, is not defined by quick fixes or blaming others for making you feel anger or annoyance. You are responsible for your own actions and reactions and as a parent you are required to be patient and thorough in your dealings with rearing a child. There are no easy answers and your children’s safety should not fall victim to time saving schemes. They deserve better. My daughter can expect more practice lessons over the following weeks.
