Malaika Wa Azania: Things that happen in other organisation that do not happen in the ANC: 1. Presidents who rule until death do them part with the party. 2. Presidential candidates who come from nowhere: they join the organisation today and tomorrow they are contesting the presidency. 3. Leaders of other organisations being made presidential candidates when there are thousands of seasoned comrades who know the organisation better, have served it longer and carry its institutional memory. 4. Presidents who are not elected through democratic processes. 5. Presidents who are decided by the courts. 6. Presidents who are expelled through press conferences by a faction of an NEC...who in turn expel those who expelled them...who in turn take the expelled-but-not-constitutionally-expelled- president to court...who then lays counter-charges...and so on and so forth and stuff like that. 7. Individuals with titles that were not earned on the battlefield of congress. Many things happen in the ANC. I mean, this is an organisation that recalls a sitting president in the middle of the night. But one thing that this organisation masters better than all organisations is this thing called internal democracy. Sure, the nature of that democracy can be debated: we can argue that patronage cannot exist in a mutualistic relationship with democracy. But no person is going to be taken from AZAPO or PAC today and made an ANC presidential candidate tomorrow. No person is going to just emerge as a president without being subjected to an elective congress. And nobody is going to lead the ANC until thy kingdom come as we see in IFP for example. Not in the ANC. You find people leading a branch having been in the organisation for more than 20 years. But elsewhere, you are a member for 20minutes and you are made a presidential candidate...while you are still constitutionally a leader of your own party. And we wonder why the ANC, despite all its horrendous weaknesses, is still a party of choice for the majority... If the ANC is going to be removed from power, a serious opposition will have to emerge. And I mean very serious, comrades. At this rate that things are going, we will be led by this problematic organisation until our grandchildren have grandchildren of their own...
