Malamulele can refer to the town of Malamulele or the area of Malamulele. Both the town (approximately in the center of the area) and area are in the Limpopo province of South Africa and predominantly occupied by Tsonga people . The town itself is located 35 km away from the Punda Maria gate of the Kruger National Park although the borders of it are against the fence of the Kruger. An example is Ntlhaveni Block H. Malamulele is situated between Giyani (former Gazankulu Capital) and Thohoyandou (former Venda capital). 243 km away from Polokwane , and 453 km away from Pretoria. Malamulele is contained within the Thulamela Local Municipality. History Parts of Malamulele were part of the Xipilongo Empire. Malamulele was the first town to be built in the former Gazankulu homeland, prior to Giyani. It was named by Chief Risimati Chanyela Mulamula. More than fifteen years after South Africa became a democracy, Malamulele is still dictated by the Thulamela Municipality. Malamulele is large in terms of population size and land area to warrant an independent municipality. Geography Malamulele is situated approximately 40 km away from the Punda Maria gate of the Kruger National Park, and approximately 195 km north-east of Polokwane formerly (Pietersburg). Malamulele is approximately 1551.93 km², 1551925652.81 m², 383489.18 acres, 155192.57 hectares, 16704788751.04 feet², or 451.89 square nautical miles big. Climate The town has a very dry subtropical climate , specifically a humid subtropical climate ( Köppen climate classification : Cwa), with long hot and rainy summers and short cool and dry winters. Demographics Malamulele has a population of ± 500 000 people however the Statistics SA of 2011 registered 13,070, at the moment Malamulele has 4 sections. During the festive seasons the area become overcrowded because people enjoy to spend festive time in their home lands. There are two police stations which are Saselamani SAPS and Malamulele SAPS situated 32 km from each other crime rate is too low as majority of people living at this area are full of respect. Malamulele is having rivers and big Dams called Nandoni,Shingwedzi and Makuleke which are having weekly influx for fishing and pleasure. Makuleke Contractual Park,Magona Buffer zone and Nandoni Dam are the main national destinations at Malamulele.At Makuleke contractual Park there is a human heritage side which it is believed to be one million years old. Malamulele is the only old town which is still having an open land to accommodate the modern infrastructure such as Big malls and Big buildings however government and investers should work hand in hand with local traditional leaders for the utilization of their land. Transport The residents of Malamulele and the surrounding villages mostly use taxis,private cars as a mode of transport. Private bus services are also used. Buses City to City and other bus operators operate a long-distance bus services to Gauteng, especially Pretoria and Johannesburg. Private taxis and buses operates bus services to Giyani and Malamulele and Ntlaveni. Do Light Transport (PTY) Ltd is the major transport service provider from Malamulele to Giyani, Louis Trichardt, Thohoyandou and from Malamulele Centre to Matiyani, Salema / Xikundu also to Makahlule, Mashobye, Nghomunghomu, Nkovani including Giant Reeves, Plaanje, Lomabrd and Merwe as well as Dakari, Mdavula, Gumbani, Phaphazela, Mukhomi and Mahonisi Road The R81 is the major road that runs through Malamulele. It links Malamulele to Giyani and also joins the R524 to Punda Maria gate of the Kruger National Park. Society and culture Malamulele is a place where one can find Original xibelani,Tinjovo, Timbila and many xitsonga traditional activities such as Ngoma (initiation school),tikhomba,Tlangu waku humesa nwana, waku vuyisa mati,wa swigamatsuka,xigubu,Geregere, musevetho and many more. Media Main article: Media in Malamulele Radio People from Malamulele listen to Munghana Lonene FM Capricorn Voice and the newly establish Mala FM Community Radio Station. Students at the nearby University of Venda tune into UniVen Radio for campus news. Likewise, Malamulele students in other universities like the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Johannesburg, the University of Limpopo, the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, tend to listen to campus radio when on campus or via audio streaming [4] . Malamulele Community Radio or Mala FM went on air in April 2013. Print Media There is the Nthavele newspaper thats in circulation. Matimu News is now only online. Oher country-wide news resources like Sunday Times, Sowetan, Daily Sun, Mail and Guardian, and others are also consumed by the people of Malamulele. Papers like Xivoni no longer exist, and they have been swallowed up by Mirror. Television SABC, eTV and DStv are the order of the day. However, not everyone can afford DStv but SABC and eTV are guaranteed. There has been some Xitsonga programming of late, including the Xitsonga news (Mahungu) on SABC 2 and other talk shows. Mafenya Brothers have also entered the movie industry and to date they are the only movie-makers that make 100% Xitsonga movies in South Africa. Sport Two of the most popular sports in Malamulele are soccer and boxing. Malamulele stadium is sometimes used by Black Leopards for matches. Malamulele Boxing Gym is also a world class gym facility where boxing training is administered by Cassius Baloyis father . Cassius Baloyi, a boxer who holds six world championship belts originate from Malamulele. Other notable boxers from the area are Isaac Hlatswayo and Jeffrey Mathebula. Soccer players from the area includes Collins Chabalala, former Orlando Pirates player, Tonic Chabalala and Selby Chauke who all traded their skills in the Premier Soccer League. Having more than two or less than two are exceptions that cannot be ruled out. Commerce and Industry Malamulele shopping centre, Quick Save shopping complex, Cheapside shopping complex and Malamulele Crossings are some of the main shopping areas around the town of Malamulele. Saselamani Shopping Centre is outside the town of Malamulele but is also quite substantial. Each village has a shopping center with a grouping of shops from 2 to maybe 5. There are also many shops in the village and many more spaza shops. There also used to be gold mining activities at Menele (Madonsi) and it is not known what has been happening since the mine was acquitted by Giyani Gold. There is Fumani Gold Mine at Mitititi . The Makuleke village owns a Laxury lodge inside Kruger National Park and employed workers. A booming industry is that of collecting wood, sand, bricks, water, etc., by truck or van. There are also many local builders that can build huts or town houses. You get architects and welders, cobblers and barbers. Most of these are self-started businesses and they run relatively well. Another job that mostly women take on is that of vending in schools or the village market. This job does not pay well except when they work in town. Other people from Malamulele are employed in Malamulele Town, Thohoyandou or even Giyani, although this is seldom as transport to Giyani is hard to come by. They work as casheirs or do administrative jobs, among many other semi-skilled jobs. There are also many teachers. Also, there is a Big church, Known as AFM Auditorium, it is built by its church members, Under the leadership of the well known Pastor G.F Maluleke in the area of Malamulele. This Church is mostly used for hire to the Biggest events because of its nature and comfort. Other people depend on government projects to tar or maintain roads, maintain water facilities or install pipelines, and also build houses like the RDP project of yesterday. One project of this type was called or dubbed Macela- komile, meaning you dig even when the ground is dry. Everyone in Malamulele is a subsistence farmer at their own backyard, with a few having actual farming plots between villages. Milling machines have also become commonplace as there are many subsistence farmers as grinding a lot of maize could be difficult.
