Malawi General Elections 2014: 7 Days to Go!!! General elections will be held in Malawi on 20 May 2014. They will also be Malawis first tripartite elections, meaning that it is the first time the people of Malawi will vote for their local government, members of parliament and President in a single election. - A simple majority of votes needed to win a presidential election. - Malawi has adopted a running mate system for the Presidential election. - Malawi has maintained a polity score of 6/10 since 2005, designating it as a democracy. The Polity data series is a widely used data series in political science research. Politys conclusions about a states level of democracy are based on an evaluation of that states elections for competitiveness, openness and level of participation. For each year and country, a Polity Score is determined which ranges from -10 to +10, with -10 to -6, autocracies, -5 to 5, anocracies, and 6 to 10, democracies. - There are twelve candidates who have been allowed to contest for the Presidential Election by the Malawi Electoral Commission. - Opinion Polls, Research Tech Consultants (42%) and Nyasa Times Media (30%), predicts Joyce Banda to win the Presidential Polls. The Malawi Electoral Commission cautions that opinion pollsters in Malawi often have questionable credentials and publish biased reports. Some opinion polls have been criticized for lacking credibility and using non-scientific methods.
