Malcom Floyd: "I Kind of Dodged a Bullet" Wide receiver Malcom Floyd addressed the media on Tuesday less than 24 hours after sustaining an injury. Malcom Floyd was scared. He just made a play on the ball when he landed awkwardly. In pain, his mind immediately went to the darkest place possible. I was pretty contorted. That stuff goes through your head when you go through something like that.” But luckily for one of the all-around good guys in the NFL, the diagnoses of a knee strain was far less severe than initially feared. “Fortunately, I kind of dodged a bullet with this one,” Floyd said. “We were just doing one-on-ones and I just got twisted up on a play and came down on my knee…. It feels better than what it looked like on the field. We’re just taking it day by day. It feels better than yesterday.” While it’s been a rough 24 hours, Floyd says he was comforted by the outpouring of support from his teammates and fans. “It was awesome,” he said. “Being here for 10 years, you’ve got a lot of people on your side. To see the players get down and pray for me as well, you feel the love and the connection with your teammates.” Last season, Floyd led the team with a career-high 56 catches for 814 yards and five touchdowns. Since 2008, Floyd has totaled 208 catches for 3,268 yards and 21 touchdowns. His 17.5 yards per catch average during the past five seasons is the third-highest in the NFL over that span. As a result, it’s no wonder that head coach Mike McCoy breathed a sigh of relief that the injury wasn’t as severe as it could have been. “(Malcom’s) doing great today,” said McCoy. “It was a great relief last night when we got the news that we got. When he went down, you always fear the worst. It’s just one of those things that you never know how people are going to react. And then we got the news like everybody else knows already that it is what it is, so he’ll be back out here as soon as he can. But he had a smile on his face this morning that it wasn’t something serious.” Still, the Chargers are not putting a timetable on Floyd’s return but will proceed at the pace of the doctors’ advice. “We’re going to take it day by day,” said McCoy. “He is sore, but I’m not a doctor and the staff will take care of him the best they can. The most important part is to get healthy and be 100 percent for the opener. So we’ll take it one day at a time and see how it goes.”
