Maloney’s endorsement of Larkin creates political firestorm NEWBURGH – When Democrat Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney showed up at Republican State Senator William Larkin’s reelection campaign headquarters last weekend, it appeared to be a love-fest, but the fallout was somewhat different. Maloney, who is known to cross the political aisle in Washington, praised Larkin for his work in New York. “The reason I really love this guy is because I have watched him work,” Maloney told the room full of Larkin supporters. They included other Democrats including Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy and Orange County Legislator Curlie Dillard. Maloney said Larkin and he work well together. “Just in the short time that I have been privileged to be in Congress, he has been such a remarkable partner to me,” the freshman lawmaker said. Larkin will face Democrat Newburgh City Councilwoman Gay Lee in the general election and on Monday, she was critical of Larkin and Maloney. “I get the whole concept of crossing the aisle, but damn, Sean, couldn’t you have picked somebody else to cross the aisle with?” Lee queried. “Senator Larkin is a staunch conservative Republican who would not cross the aisle to do anything.” While cameras clicked at Larkin’s event last weekend, Republican big-wigs made it clear they did not want to be in the same photograph with Maloney and went so far as to say they were there to back Larkin, but at the same time, support Maloney’s Republican opponent, former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth.
