Mammalian Monogamy Mystery Solve this evolutionary puzzle: why are some mammalian species monogamous if they have greater reproductive potential with multiple partners? Researchers have been diving into that very question by scouring what selective advantages would lead a male mammal to confine his reproduction to a single female. Researchers Lukas and Clutton-Brock examined data from over 2500 mammals across 26 orders containing 60 evolutionary transitions to monogamy. They found that males shifted to monogamy where ecological factors promoted wide spacing of individual females. This means that monogamy evolved where males were not able gain access to and protect multiple females at once.
