Man Utd vs Wigan: Team News, Match Preview & Likely Line-Ups Team News Manchester United are likely to be without Wayne Rooney for Sunday’s Premier League curtain-raiser against Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield. The 27-year-old has missed the majority of the champion’s pre-season campaign and did not feature in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla on Friday. Javier Hernandez is expected to take his place, while new signing Wilfried Zaha will likely get a run-out. Defender Jonny Evans and winger Nani are expected to miss out after limping off against AIK Solna on Tuesday, while midfielder Darren Fletcher is continuing his recovery from a serious bowel condition. Wigan could hand a debut to new signing James McClean, who has become the Latic’s 10th summer signing after joining from Sunderland. However, fellow new signing Thomas Rogne is out with a back problem, though Leon Barnett and Emmerson Boyce have impressed during pre-season and will likely retain their places in Owen Coyle’s side. Grant Holt will lead the line for his new club after dropping down a division from Norwich, with Marc Antoine-Fortune likely to be demoted to the bench. Gary Caldwell (hip) and Ivan Ramis (knee) will be out until at least October. Likely Line-Ups Manchester United De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Young, Van Persie, Hernandez Wigan Athletic Carson, McArthur, Crainey, Watson, Barnett, McClean, Beausejour, McCarthy, Maloney, Boyce, Holt Match Preview Manchester United and Wigan Athletic will contest the first piece of silverware of the season as the two sides come head-to-head in tomorrow’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. New United manager David Moyes will be hoping to put a dreadful pre-season campaign behind him by lifting his first trophy as manager of the Red Devils, having won just two of his first seven games at the club. Friday’s 3-1 defeat to Sevilla in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial was not the way the champions will have hoped to have started their run up to the new season, but victory here today will whitewash those bad memories. As for Wigan, the Latics also have a new manager in Owen Coyle, who will be hoping lightning strikes twice for his new club who are aiming for back-to-back triumphs at Wembley. Back in May, the Lancashire outfit stunned Manchester City by prevailing 1-0 in the FA Cup final and a win here today would be just as big of an upset. However, United triumphed 4-0 home and away over today’s opposition last season, and are the clear favourites.
