Man ahead of woman? Q - They say females only come from/after males, so male domination over females is justified? A - There is one account, in at least two different accounts of Creation, which does NOT say that man/male was created ahead of the woman: ---------- Gen 1.26-27 (NIV) 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;male and female he created them. ---------- The CEV version of Gen 1.26-28 uses the word humans, a generic reference to the human race, not to the male gender only. This is a more faithful translation. It is only in Genesis 2 that another version of the creation story presents the woman as being created after the male. ----------- Gen 2.7-24 CEV 7 The Lord God took a handful of soil and made a man.[g] God breathed life into the man, and the man started breathing. 18 The Lord God said, “It isn’t good for the man to live alone. I need to make a suitable partner for him.” 19-20 So the Lord took some soil and made animals and birds. He brought them to the man to see what names he would give each of them. ...None of these was the right kind of partner for the man. 21 So the Lord God made him fall into a deep sleep, and he took out one of the man’s ribs. Then after closing the man’s side, 22 the Lord made a woman out of the rib. The Lord God brought her to the man, 23 and the man exclaimed, “Here is someone like me!She is part of my body,my own flesh and bones. She came from me, a man.So I will name her Woman!”[i] ----- So we have at least two versions of the same story in the same Bible, only a few verses away from each other. Each version is at least half of the story! Each version is as biblical as the other. The first version (Gen 1) presents males and females, (Yes, plural as in humanity/sangkatauhan) as being created at the same time. This is very similar to the Filipino version of Genesis where Malakas and Maganda simultaneoulsy emerge from the same bamboo node.) The second version (Gen 2) where the male is created ahead of the female naturally became much more popular in paternalistic/patriarchal. male-dominated Israel.
