Man hit by train At approximately 10:38 p.m., a Union Pacific freight train was travelling northbound having just passed under the Oasis Street overpass. The engineer of the train saw a male subject, dressed in dark clothing walking northbound on the west side of the train tracks. As the train drew closer to the male subject, he ran across the railroad tracks to the east side, in front of the train. The male subject appeared to notice there was a tall dirt bank on the east side of the tracks, so he turned and ran back towards the west side of the tracks just as the train was passing him. The engineer immediately applied the emergency brake and stopped the train. The engineer said the last time he saw the male subject, the male was right at the front corner of the front train engine. The engineer quickly exited the train and located the male laying on the east side of the train tracks with what appeared to be severe head trauma. The male was conscious and able to speak, but with some difficulty, due to the swelling. Fire and Medical personnel arrived with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and rendered aid to the male, who was identified as Gino Childs, 34, of Redding. Due to Childs injuries, he was packed back to the ambulance, then transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment. This incident is currently being investigated by Union Pacific Railroad.
