Man years ago, in my first couple years in Saudi Arabia, I had heard vicious gossip about a certain someone, so much so that I began to dislike/hate him though I had barely interacted with him. This gossip was often justified in the name of religion. At that moment, I was gullible and thought that other, more experienced and learned, students of knowledge will likely not be leading a life of sin. This individual must truly be wicked for such honourable people to indulge in backbiting and disparaging him! Years later, Allah blessed me to interact with this person closely and found him to be one of the most pleasant people I have met in my life, so much so that I often find myself making Dua for him when I remember his beautiful and pleasant character. I almost never recall the brothers who were relentlessly speaking ill of that individual despite our long and, in many ways, fruitful relationship. Allahu Akbar! This is why our beloved scholars always remind us that, the statements of peers against one another should be folded away and not related onwards. There is much wisdom in this and it took an event that extended a decade for me to truly understand this.
