Mandi Bahauddin: Flood affected people of Mandi Bahauddin district held a protest demonstration at Helan Chowk Phalia the other day and blocked traffic on Gujrat - Phalia Road for several hours. They protested that they were not given any compensation for the loss they suffered in recent heavy floods that devastated their houses, crops and animals. They complained that revenue department officials prepared false lists to include their favorites and obliged them with compensation and relief goods. The deserving persons were not included in the lists. They went further and told that patwaries and teshsildars selected some persons and produced them before CM Shahbaz Sharif during his visit as flood affected. The CM paid them Rs 25000 each. None of the real flood affected person was included in them. Similarly relief goods were distributed among the relatives and favorites’ of local leaders and revenue officials. They pointed out that Government and philanthropists donated lot of funds for help of flood beaten people but the revenue officials misused them. They also said that 6 truck loads of tents was sent to this district for distribution among people whose houses were destroyed but not a single man was given a tent. They demanded compensation for their loss as per CM Shahbaz Sharif promises. They also demanded inquiry against revenue officers for not providing relief goods to the genuine and deserving persons. Tehsildar and SHO Phalia with some officials reached the place of demonstration and negotiated with participants of the protest. On their promise for meeting their demand the demonstrators dispersed. The protesters included women and children as well. They were badly hit by floods in River Chenab and River Jhelum and are still waiting for help.
