Mangaonkar in final..Pandole, Kalgutkar shocked Defending champion and top seed Mahesh Ma ngaonkar of Maharashtra halted former champion Gaurav Nandrajog of Delhi in a quality contest to enter the Men’s Open final, in the 70th CCI-Western India Open Squash Tournament at the Cricket Club of India on Friday. India No. 2 Mangaonkar endured a strong challenge from Nandrajog to snatch a 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 win in a 75 minute battle. Nandrajog made a brave effort to stretch his much accomplished opponent but failed to change the script. After winning the first set with surprise ease, Nandrajog frittered away a 7-2 lead in the second set that allowed Mangaonkar to claw his way back into the match. National champion and boys under-13 top seed Veer Chotrani of Maharashtra also faced a surprise challenge from a determined Utkarsh Baheti of Rajasthan before escaping to a nail-biting 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 semi-final win in one of the most absorbing matches of the day. Chotrani, of Khar Gymkhana, was forced to battle back from a 0-2 deficit after Baheti, a junior national semi-finalist, snatched the opening two sets in dramatic fashion. Chotrani set up a title clash with arch-rival and second seed Tushar Shahani who will get an opportunity to avenge his defeat in the junior national championship round. In the upsets of the day, Ranjit Singh of UP stunned boys’ under-17 second seed Yohan Pandole of CCI 3-2 after the latter squandered an envious 2-0 advantage, while Dutch Junior Open winner and national runner-up Akanksha Salunkhe of Goa upset second seed Jui Kalgutkar of Maharashtra 11-7, 16-18, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3. The other significant winners were Ashita Bhengra of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra’s Aishwarya Bhattacharya and junior national runner-up Aryaman Adik.
