Mangosuthu University of Technology Press release statement 5 March 2014 Submitted by Bheki Hlophe, Publications and Media Relations Officer, Marketing and Communications, MUT [email protected] ... A dialogue between MUT parents and management MUT has convened a meeting for parents and guardians of all students. This meeting is scheduled to take place on 8 March 2014. The Registrar, Mike Naidoo, says the main reason is that MUT regards the parents as of its strategic stakeholders, who are the university’s partners in education. MUT wants to keep the parents updated. “We want to share with parents and guardians strategic matters of the university that concern our children’s education. And also discuss challenges we face, like the financial support, and the related matters of the students. We’ll also delve into the academic performance of the students.” The meeting will give parents a chance to interact with both academic and administration staff on issues concerning students, who are the centre of a relationship between the university and the parents. This engagement with parents is now in its third year. The success of this engagement has its fruits on how the University builds its relations with the SRC and the student body. While many KZN institutions were involved in students’ protests by mid-February, MUT had made headway with its curriculum. By the time, the VC, Prof Mashupye Kgaphola delivered a state of the university address on 14 February, the University had even identified top students that had attained more than 75% overall marks in their academic programmes in 2013. As a result these students were awarded free tuition in 2014. It is this story of excellence and success of their children that MUT wants to share with parents. Notwithstanding, Prof Kgaphola, says, “We have an obligation to share with parents all the challenges that we have as a University. At the same time, we need to listen to the parents and find out what they would like to see from an MUT undergraduate. We need to constantly engage parents and guardians as they are our primary stakeholders.” One of the highlights of the meeting will be a presentation on infrastructural development at MUT in the next five years. As things stand, the first students’ residences to be built by MUT since the nineties, is under construction and more than 640 students will be relocated from the residences in town. ENDS With regards, Bheki Hlophe
