Manifesto Time! If ya have a minute or two take a read its not as boring as it looks! :) Thanks again everyone for the support please continue to like and share my page x Hi all, I’m Janis and I am a fourth year CDM student and your Internal Entertainments officer this year. Some of you may have seen my face floating around the college over the past few years as I have been involved in the SU since my second year in college. I was involved in the Entertainment and Welfare Crews and last year I was elected as your Equality Officer. During my first elected year I was given the opportunity to act as the female student representative in Governing Body, the highest board in the college along with former SU president Mark Mooney and college President Pat McLaughlin. Over the past four years as a student and SU officer I have been part of many solutions for many issues regarding student and college life and if elected I plan to implement some new ideas and changes which I feel would lead to an improvement of student life in the college. I won’t go on for too long but here are just a few bits I would like to focus on if elected as Education Officer. I feel like there is a lot of potential of what can be done with the role of Education Officer and I would like to expand the job further then class rep meetings, bookshop management and student/lecturer disputes. ITTSU App: A majority of students are now using or know a student with a smart phone. For years students have had to log onto the likes of Facebook to keep track on upcoming events and campaigns and to access information. If elected I would like to implement an ITTSU App. The app would include sections on study tips for exams, contact details for SU and what we are available for, notifications on upcoming campaigns, events and information on clubs and societies. Other colleges I know have implemented similar apps and they have done extremely well. There is no reason why ITTSU shouldn’t use these new technologies to improve everyday student life. The Students Union is here for the students and they should have the information there in their hands. Employment for ITT: I plan on visiting and contacting local businesses and companies to keep students up to date on part-time job opportunities in the local area; in order to relieve their financial stress and give them work experience to apply to their CV to help them with future applications. I will ask them to notify ITTSU first of any openings they may have. The students of ITT are hard working, skilled and available to work in the Tallaght area. I know it won’t guarantee every student employment but even if it will help some it’s better than none at all. We have given the Square Tallaght amazing support this year and now it’s time we asked for something from them in return. Defending your Education: A high percentage of the student body are grant receiving students and every year the government aim to lower the cut off income rate, which in turn causes a rise in students that are not eligible for grants, which then causes the level of students dropping out to increase. If elected I will run and lead campaigns alongside USI and work hard to protect your rights as students and your right to the education you deserve. Book Shop: The book shop has been extremely useful for students who are trying to save money by purchasing second hand books. If elected I will keep the bookshop as beneficial to students as possible. I will also introduce an online bookshop system by taking a stock-take of books available and using the Google Doc. feature to let the students know what is available through the SU Facebook page so students don’t have to trek over to the SU building to check. Class Rep System: The class rep system is a vital part of the student body, they are elected by their classmates and voted for because of their willingness to contribute towards positive changes that can be made to student life. If you chose me as your Education Officer I plan to focus on using the class rep system to its full potential, not only meeting them as a whole but speaking to reps from particular departments to tackle common issues amongst them. Student Grants: Every year students deal with many issues in relation to their student grants application. This year we have seen the SUSI system introduced and has proved as a highly successful process for applying for student grants. As a grants receiving student with the VEC I am already aware of the system and the application programme but many are still unsure of the requirements and the process for SUSI grant applications. If elected I would work with the full-time Welfare Officer in order to educate myself on the SUSI system in order to help as many students as early on in the year as possible. The Welfare Officer is extremely busy throughout the year and I would feel this would help relieve stress and by sharing the workload. Improving Campus Life: Wifi Hotspots - Over the past few years there has been a problem with the lack of students being able to access computers. During my year as Equality Officer, I voiced the students’ issue of the lack of computers and worked closely with the full-time officers to introduce plug sockets in the library for students to bring in their own laptops. This was great progress but no improvements have been made since. If elected I will lobby for every computer lab to be accessible for all students and also introduce specific Wifi hotspots throughout popular parts of the college campus, like the Mezz, the SU and the library. Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Campaign - If elected I would like to implement a brand new campaign to IT Tallaght. The Healthy Body, Healthy Mind campaign will be a joint campaign between ITTSU and ITT Clubs & Socs; which will highlight the benefits of keeping fit and healthy eating in order to improve concentration and focus when it comes to study and lifestyle. The week will feature activities and stands provided by representatives of both the college Clubs & Socs and outside organizations. This campaign will provide a healthy balance to college life along with the already successful campaigns and infamous nights out. Finally - I’ve learned so much about bringing top quality entertainment to the students off IT Tallaght from my year as Internal Ents Officer. I’ve had a three extremely successful years being involved with entertainments in ITTSU bringing in some top acts such as Coolio, Tinchy Stryder, Dead Prezidents and Ben Pearce! If elected I will continue working to bring in big name acts for the students of ITT. To ensure you all are enjoying every aspect of college life! Well that’s it from me for now, hope you all enjoyed reading my manifesto. Fair play to anyone who made it to the end! I’ve had two amazing part-time years as part of the SU and I would love nothing more than to stay on another year and work every day to better the student life for you all in IT Tallaght. So remember next Wednesday and Thursday #MakeItMolloy and … VOTE JANIS MOLLOY #1 FOR EDUCATION 2014/15
