Manila Bulletin – Wed, Oct 23, 2013 A Filipino is scheduled to be executed in Saudi Arabia after Nov. 3. Vice President Jejomar Binay said aside from prayers for Joselito Zapanta, blood money could still save him from the death row. Zapanta received a death sentence for killing a Sudanese national in 2009. Binay is appealing for extension to raise the blood money and hoping the amount will be brought down. Zapantas family needs to raise SAR 4 million or about P45 million to pay the family of the victim. The deadline for the settlement of the blood money is on Nov. 3. Binay, who serves as presidential adviser on OFW concerns, said only SAR 520,831 have been raised so far. Binay said he remains hopeful that Zapanta’s life will be spared. He noted the case of Rodelio “Dondon” Lanuza who also faced the death row in Saudi but recently returned home after 13 years of imprisonment. The Philippine government and supporters of Lanuza raised only SAR 700,000 for his SAR 3 million or almost P35 million blood money. The king of Saudi shouldered the remaining amount. The Saudi government had already extended twice the period to collect Zapanta’s blood money. The family of the victim had also agreed to lower the amount from SAR 5 million to SAR 4 million. #green
