The two teams were evenly matched in the first half, with neither succeeding in breaching the defence line of the other. Though both teams tried to achieve the break through with a series of attacks and counter attacks, the first half ended in a deadlock with the score line reading 0-0. Backed by a strong home crowd, the Mizoram team started dominating the match in the second half and with better ball possession and crisp passing started to make forays into the territory of the team from Manipur. The attacking mode finally paid dividends, when the Mizoram team found the net twice in the second half to seal the match and send Manipur crashing out of the qualifying round. The two teams were evenly tied before the match and Manipur had a good chance to proceed, even if the match had ended in a draw, due to better goal difference
