Manuel Velez #999540 finally has the yoke of Death Row removed!! Manuel, from the beginning, has maintained his innocence in the tragic death of his girlfriends child, however, with the false testimony of the girlfriend (she received 10 years), he ended up on Death Row. Of course, lousy attorneys played a role in the original trial by failing to challenge the testimony of the States medical experts. Manuel entered Death Row in 2008, the TCCA overturned his conviction in 2012 and in June of 2013, the case was remanded for a new punishment hearing. In April of 2014, the Cameron County DA was still vowing to retry Manuel and, after the hard work of his new attorneys, was offered a plea of no contest to reckless injury to a child with a sentence of 15 years. He will soon be eligible for parole, having been imprisoned for 9 years. In 2013, the law firm that represented Mr. Velez received an Exceptional Service Award from the American Bar Association for Pro Bono Death Penalty Representation for their work in securing Mr. Velezs retrial. Manuel is being housed in Cameron County. The State of Texas should be liable for this false conviction and have to pay Manuel for every minute he was on Death Row!
