Many Mighty Girl modern classics are stories that were beloved by the parents of todays Mighty Girls when they were children. We recently featured 20 beloved Mighty Girl classics published before 1950 and, in our new blog post, were showcasing 20 favorite Mighty Girl stories published between 1950 and 1990. These twenty books show the dramatic shift in how authors thought of and wrote about Mighty Girl characters. The girls in these pages tackle difficult social issues like prejudice and poverty, and their adventures can happen anywhere from a bustling city street to a solitary wilderness. More diverse characters also begin to appear as girls of color take on the role of the protagonist, rather than appear as companions or background characters. And, more and more, girls being portrayed as daring, smart and courageous is no longer considered unusual -- thats just the way girls are!
